Often considered an optional step that varies greatly from editor to editor. My version consists of a diagnostic report based on my evaluation of the work’s general strengths and weaknesses.
Less in-depth than a Manuscript Assessment, a Beta Read is a light review from the point of view of a potential reader, identifying plot problems, broad inconsistencies, and areas of confusion. As a test audience, an ideal beta reader is one knowledgeable in the genre or subject of a manuscript.
Often overlaps with a Sensitivity Read, but differs in that the aim of the review is to evaluate a manuscript for anything that might offend, misrepresent, or stereotype people from a specific group. An ideal reader will be part of the community in question or have deep ties to it.
The Sensitivity Read is a broader review that focuses on anything that might offend readers from any community, to ensure that a manuscript is acceptable to the broadest audience.
A deep-dive into a manuscript carried out early in the editing process. Whereas a Manuscript Assessment outlines a manuscript’s strengths and weaknesses, a Developmental Edit focuses on how to address the problems within a manuscript.
The main focus of a Line Edit is to improve the language, flow, and style of a manuscript at a paragraph level. This should only be done on a manuscript that is beyond the stage of big, developmental edits, as it consists of marking up the manuscript with changes to wording and grammar.
